Compass App — Privacy Policy
NextOne Labs LLC — Last updated: October 21, 2026
Summary: Compass has no user accounts and no cloud sync. Your waypoints, trails, parking spots and settings are stored only on your device, and your GPS location is never sent to our servers. When you save a parking spot while online, the app looks up its street address using your phone's address service (Google on most phones); you can turn this off in Settings. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, and the app uses Google Firebase Analytics to understand how features are used. Both are third-party services that collect limited device data, described in section 4. Buying Compass Pro removes ads.
1. Information We Do Not Collect
NextOne Labs LLC does not operate any server that receives your data from Compass. We do not collect:
- Names, email addresses, or contact information
- Your GPS coordinates, waypoints, or recorded trails
- Photos, camera images, or media files
- Payment card details (purchases are handled entirely by Google Play)
2. Data That Stays on Your Device
Compass stores the following data locally on your device only:
- Saved waypoints: coordinates, names, icons, colors and notes for locations you save.
- Trails: the GPS points, distance and timing of trails you record with Way Back.
- Parking spots (Find My Car): where and when you parked, the vehicle name, and, if you add them, a note, a parking meter time and one photo of the spot. Photos are kept in the app's private storage, never in your gallery, and are deleted when you delete the spot or its history entry.
- Preferences: settings such as theme, units, north reference and dial style.
This data is never uploaded by the app, and waypoints, trails, parking spots and photos are not included in Android cloud backups. You can delete all locally stored data at any time by clearing the app's data in your device settings, or by uninstalling the app.
3. Permissions
Compass requests permissions at the point of use, not at startup. You can deny any permission and keep using the features that don't need it.
- Location (precise and approximate): used for true north correction, waypoint navigation, Way Back, speed, altitude, and sun and moon times. Location is processed on your device.
- Foreground service (location) and notifications: used only while you are recording a trail, so recording continues with the screen off. A persistent notification is shown the whole time and you can stop it at any moment. Compass does not request background location access.
- Camera: used on the AR compass and sighting screens, where the camera image is displayed live and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted; and, only when you tap to add one, to take a photo of your parking spot, which is stored on your device only.
- Notifications and alarms: used for parking meter reminders you set. Reminders are scheduled on your device and re-scheduled after a restart.
- Vibration: used for optional haptic feedback.
- Internet and network state: used to load map tiles, ads, analytics, and Google Play purchases.
4. Third-Party Services
Compass uses the following Google services. Each one collects data under its own privacy policy:
- Google AdMob (ads): the free version shows banner ads. AdMob may collect your device's advertising ID, IP address (from which approximate location can be inferred), device and app information, and ad interaction data, in order to serve and measure ads and prevent fraud. In regions where consent is required, Compass asks for your consent through Google's consent form before personalized ads are shown, and you can change your choice later in the app's Settings. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings. See how Google uses data from apps that use its services.
- Google Firebase Analytics: collects an app instance identifier, device type, OS version, app version, approximate country, which features are used, and in-app purchase events (the product and its price; never your payment details), to help us understand and improve the app. Firebase records purchase events automatically, and the app also logs when a purchase starts and succeeds. It does not receive your GPS location, waypoints, or trails. See the Firebase privacy information.
- Google Play Billing: handles Compass Pro purchases. Google processes your payment; we receive only a purchase confirmation needed to unlock Pro on your device. See the Google Payments privacy notice.
- Google Maps SDK: loads map tiles when you open the map. Google may receive the map area being viewed, your IP address (from which approximate location can be inferred), device information, crash diagnostics such as stack traces, and a pseudonymous SDK identifier, to provide the map, keep it working and prevent abuse. See the Maps SDK data disclosure.
- Google Play Services: provides device location and the in-app review prompt.
- Android geocoding service: when you save a parking spot while online, the spot's coordinates are sent to your device's geocoding service (provided by Google on most phones) to look up the street address. Nothing else about the spot is sent, and without a connection the spot is saved with coordinates only. You can turn address lookup off in the app's Settings, and then coordinates are never sent.
All of the above are subject to Google's Privacy Policy. Other than these services, Compass does not share any data with third parties, and we do not sell your data. See section 9 for how ads relate to US state privacy laws.
5. Data Export and Sharing
You can export waypoints as GPX, KML, JSON or CSV files and trails as GPX files, and share a location (for example by SMS from the SOS card). These actions only happen when you start them, and the data goes only to the app or contact you choose.
6. Children's Privacy
Compass is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Data Security and Retention
Data stored on your device is protected by your device's built-in security. We recommend using a screen lock and keeping your system up to date. Data collected by the Google services above is retained according to Google's policies; Firebase Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months.
8. Your Choices
- Change or withdraw your ad and analytics consent in the app's Settings → Privacy options (shown where a consent choice applies).
- Turn off street address lookup for parking spots in the app's Settings.
- Reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Google settings.
- Remove ads entirely by buying Compass Pro.
- Delete all app data by clearing storage or uninstalling the app.
9. Your Rights in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
The controller for the limited data described in this policy is NextOne Labs LLC, reachable at the contact address in section 12. Google acts as an independent controller or as our processor for the services in section 4, as described in its own policies.
Legal bases. Where the law requires it, we rely on your consent for personalized advertising and for analytics and ad measurement; Compass asks for it through Google's consent form before these run. Otherwise we rely on our legitimate interests in operating and improving the app, showing non-personalized ads in the free version, and preventing fraud and abuse. Processing that is needed to deliver a Compass Pro purchase relies on performance of a contract.
Your rights. You have the right to:
- access the personal data held about you and receive a copy of it;
- have it corrected or deleted;
- object to or restrict processing based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw your consent at any time, in the app's Settings → Privacy options, without affecting processing that took place before you withdrew it;
- lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.
We do not hold your waypoints, trails, parking spots or photos; they exist only on your device and you can delete them at any time. Because the app has no accounts, we cannot link analytics or advertising identifiers to you by name. To exercise a right over data held by Google, you can also use your Google Account settings or reset your advertising ID. Contact us with any request and we will respond within the time the law requires.
10. Your Rights Under US State Privacy Laws
Residents of California and other US states with comprehensive privacy laws have rights to know, access, correct and delete personal information, and to opt out of its sale, of its sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising, and of targeted advertising.
- We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
- The free version shows ads from Google AdMob. Personalized ads may use your advertising ID, IP address and app activity, which some state laws treat as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising, or as targeted advertising.
- To opt out, use the app's Settings → Privacy options where it is shown, reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Google settings, or buy Compass Pro, which removes ads.
- We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you, and the precise location that address lookup sends to the geocoding service is used only to show your parking spot's address.
- You can make a request by emailing us; we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. If you use an authorized agent, we may ask for proof of the agent's authority.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
