Compass for iPhone and iPad — Privacy Policy
NextOne Labs LLC — Last updated: October 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy applies to Compass for iPhone and iPad.
Summary: Compass has no user accounts and no cloud sync. Your waypoints, trails, parking spots and settings are stored on your device, and your GPS location is never sent to our servers. When you save a parking spot while online, the app looks up its street address using Apple's address service; you can turn this off in Settings. The app uses Google Firebase Analytics to understand how features are used; it is a third-party service that collects limited device data, described in section 4. Compass does not track you across other companies' apps and websites.
1. Information We Do Not Collect
NextOne Labs LLC does not operate any server that receives your data from Compass. We do not collect:
- Names, email addresses, or contact information
- Your GPS coordinates, waypoints, or recorded trails
- Photos, camera images, or media files
- Payment card details (purchases are handled entirely by the Apple App Store)
2. Data That Stays on Your Device
Compass stores the following data locally on your device only:
- Saved waypoints: coordinates, names, icons, colors and notes for locations you save.
- Trails: the GPS points, distance and timing of trails you record with Way Back.
- Parking spots (Car Finder): where and when you parked, the vehicle name, and, if you add them, a note, a parking meter time and one photo of the spot. Photos are kept in the app's private storage, never in your gallery or photo library, and are deleted when you delete the spot or its history entry.
- Preferences: settings such as theme, units, north reference and dial style.
This data is never uploaded by the app, and we never receive it.
- Storage and backups: the data is stored as files in the app's own container on your device. Like other app data, it is included in the iCloud Backup or computer backup of your device if you have turned those on; such backups are made and protected by Apple and are not accessible to us. Compass does not use iCloud sync. You can delete all locally stored data at any time by deleting the app.
- Home Screen widget: the Car Finder widget (Compass Pro) shows the distance and direction to your car. To do this the app keeps a small copy of the parked spot and of the last position the app saw in storage that is shared only between the app and its own widget on your device (the app's App Group). The widget does not access your location itself, and this copy never leaves your device.
3. Permissions
Compass requests permissions at the point of use, not at startup. You can deny any permission and keep using the features that don't need it.
- Location (precise and approximate): used for true north correction, waypoint navigation, Way Back, Car Finder, speed, altitude, and sun and moon times. Location is processed on your device. Compass asks only for “While Using the App” access, never “Always”. If you have allowed approximate location only, the app may ask for precise location for that one time when you start a trail or park your car.
- Recording a trail with the screen off: location is used in the background only while you are recording a trail you started yourself, so recording continues with the screen off, and you can stop it at any moment. This uses iOS's background location mode with your “While Using” permission; iOS shows the blue location indicator the whole time, and the app never starts background location by itself.
- Camera: used on the sighting screen, where the camera image is displayed live and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted; and, only when you tap to add one, to take a photo of your parking spot, which is stored on your device only. You can also choose a parking photo from your photo library through Apple's photo picker; the app receives only the photo you pick, does not get access to the rest of your library, and stores a copy of it in its own storage.
- Notifications: used for parking meter reminders you set (Compass Pro). Reminders are scheduled locally on your device; Compass does not use push notifications. Permission is asked when you set your first meter, and reminders are time-sensitive so they can be delivered during a Focus.
- Motion and sensors: the compass, level and altitude features read the device's motion sensors, magnetometer and barometer on the device. The “Motion & Fitness” permission is used for the barometer, for smoother altitude readings.
- Vibration: used for optional haptic feedback.
- Internet: used to load map tiles, analytics, street addresses, and purchases.
4. Third-Party Services
Compass uses the following services. Each one collects data under its own privacy policy:
- Google Firebase Analytics: collects an app instance identifier, device type, OS version, app version, approximate country, which features are used, and in-app purchase events (the product and its price; never your payment details), to help us understand and improve the app. Firebase records purchase events automatically, and the app also logs when a purchase starts and succeeds. It does not receive your GPS location, waypoints, or trails. Compass uses the Firebase Analytics build without advertising identifier support, so Firebase does not receive your device's advertising identifier; ad personalization, ad user data and ad network attribution are turned off; and Firebase may use the identifier for vendor (IDFV). In regions where consent is required, analytics runs only after you agree in Google's consent form. See the Firebase privacy information.
- Purchases (Compass Pro): we receive only a purchase confirmation needed to unlock Pro on your device, never your payment details. The Apple App Store (StoreKit) handles the purchase and Apple processes your payment; the app receives a transaction confirmation from the App Store, and “Restore purchases” asks the App Store for your existing purchases. See App Store & Privacy.
- Maps: map tiles are loaded when you open the map or review a trail. Apple MapKit is used. Apple receives the map area being viewed and related device and network information to provide the map; see Apple Maps & Privacy.
- Street address lookup for parking spots: when you save a parking spot while online, the spot's coordinates are sent to Apple's geocoder (part of Core Location and MapKit) to look up the street address. Nothing else about the spot is sent, and without a connection the spot is saved with coordinates only. You can turn address lookup off in the app's Settings, and then coordinates are never sent.
- Platform services: location comes from Apple's Core Location and the review prompt from Apple's App Store.
The Google services above are subject to Google's Privacy Policy, and the Apple services to Apple's Privacy Policy. Other than these services, Compass does not share any data with third parties, and we do not sell your data. See section 9 for how ads relate to US state privacy laws.
5. Data Export and Sharing
You can export waypoints as GPX, KML, JSON or CSV files and trails as GPX files, share a location (for example by SMS from the SOS card), and create a backup file (.compassbackup) of your waypoints, trails, parking spots, photos and settings in Settings → Backup & restore. These actions only happen when you start them, and the data goes only to the app, contact or place you choose. Restoring or importing a file you pick adds its contents to the app on your device; nothing is uploaded.
6. Children's Privacy
Compass is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Data Security and Retention
Data stored on your device is protected by your device's built-in security. We recommend using a screen lock and keeping your system up to date. Data collected by the Google and Apple services above is retained according to their policies; Firebase Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months.
8. Your Choices
- Change or withdraw your analytics consent in the app's Settings → Privacy options (shown where a consent choice applies).
- Turn off street address lookup for parking spots in the app's Settings.
- Delete all app data by deleting the app (copies in older device backups are managed by you in iCloud or on your computer).
9. Your Rights in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
The controller for the limited data described in this policy is NextOne Labs LLC, reachable at the contact address in section 12. Google acts as an independent controller or as our processor for the Google services in section 4, as described in its own policies. Apple provides the App Store, MapKit, geocoding and location services as the platform provider under its own policies.
Legal bases. Where the law requires it, we rely on your consent for analytics; Compass asks for it through Google's consent form before analytics runs. Otherwise we rely on our legitimate interests in operating and improving the app and preventing fraud and abuse. Processing that is needed to deliver a Compass Pro purchase relies on performance of a contract.
Your rights. You have the right to:
- access the personal data held about you and receive a copy of it;
- have it corrected or deleted;
- object to or restrict processing based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw your consent at any time, in the app's Settings → Privacy options, without affecting processing that took place before you withdrew it;
- lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.
We do not hold your waypoints, trails, parking spots or photos; they exist only on your device (and in your own device backups) and you can delete them at any time. Because the app has no accounts, we cannot link analytics identifiers to you by name. To exercise a right over data held by Google, you can also use your Google Account settings. Contact us with any request and we will respond within the time the law requires.
10. Your Rights Under US State Privacy Laws
Residents of California and other US states with comprehensive privacy laws have rights to know, access, correct and delete personal information, and to opt out of its sale, of its sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising, and of targeted advertising.
- We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
- Compass does not share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising and does not use it for targeted advertising.
- We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you, and the precise location that address lookup sends to Apple's geocoder is used only to show your parking spot's address.
- You can make a request by emailing us; we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. If you use an authorized agent, we may ask for proof of the agent's authority.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
